Kishore Kumar Called Mumbai Friendless, Exploitative: 'Who Wants To Die In This Ugly City?'

Last Updated: Kishore Kumar opened up in an old interview about hating Mumbai, being forced into acting, and his wish to return to Khandwa before his untimely death. For all the fame and love he earned, Kishore Kumar never truly felt at home in Mumbai. In one of his rare, brutally honest interviews with The Illustrated Weekly of India, the legendary singer revealed his deep discomfort with the film industry, his dislike for the city, and how he longed to return to his roots in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh. 'Who can live in this stupid, friendless city where everyone seeks to exploit you every moment of the day? Can you trust anyone out here? Is anyone trustworthy? Is anyone a friend you can count on? I am determined to get out of this futile rat race and live as I've always wanted to. In my native Khandwa, the land of my forefathers. Who wants to die in this ugly city?" he had said. Though Kishore rose to become one of India's most beloved playback singers, few know how reluctant he was about acting — something he never truly wanted to pursue. It was, according to him, a path forced upon him by the industry and his association with his famous brother, Ashok Kumar. 'I was conned into doing this. All I wanted was to sing, and yet due to peculiar circumstances, I was persuaded to act in the movies. The directors don't give a da*n about me, they just need me because I sell," he said, revealing how unwanted the limelight often felt. To avoid acting, Kishore would go to great lengths — from sabotaging scenes to behaving erratically on set. 'I have tried every trick in the book to get out of acting. I muffed my lines, pretended to be crazy, shaved my head off, played difficult, began yodelling in the midst of tragic scenes, told Meena Kumari what I was supposed to tell Bina Rai in some other film. They still wouldn't let me go, and I hated every second of it," he admitted. Even his move to Mumbai was never about stardom. Kishore simply hoped his brother Ashok would introduce him to his musical idol, KL Saigal. But the film industry had other plans. 'The industry was determined to make a star out of me because I was dadamoni's (Ashok) brother," he said. Though he had made up his mind to leave Mumbai and settle in Khandwa, it took him two more years to wind things up. Tragically, before he could make the move, Kishore Kumar died of a heart attack — on Ashok Kumar's 76th birthday. First Published:

Gailard Sartain, Hee Haw And Mississippi Burning Actor, Dies At 81

Last Updated: Gailard Sartain, known for his roles in Hee Haw, Ernest films, The Buddy Holly Story, and Mississippi Burning, has died at 81. Veteran actor Gailard Sartain, whose career spanned decades of television, stage, and film, including a 20‑year run on Hee Haw and memorable roles in Spider‑Man and Mississippi Burning, has passed away at the age of 81. His wife of 36 years, Mary Jo Sartain, shared the news with The Hollywood Reporter, saying he died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. 'Actually, he died of silliness," she added. His friendship with Everybody Loves Raymond star Doris Roberts stood out as one of his most long‑lasting bonds; they lived together until Roberts's death in 2016. She even directed his play Screen Test: Take One, based on his love for soap operas. Sartain first captured attention on local Tulsa television as Dr. Mazeppa Pompazoidi, he hosted the spooky The Uncanny Film Festival and Camp Meeting—before finding fame on Hee Haw in 1972. He stayed on the show for nearly two decades, playing everything from Orville the cook to rambling clerks. His film résumé is vast and varied: he debuted in Nashville (1975), portrayed Jerry 'The Big Bopper" Richardson in The Buddy Holly Story (1978), and dabbled in spaghetti Westerns. On TV, audiences loved his cameos on shows like Seinfeld, Frasier, and Friends. A key turning point came with his chilling depiction of a racist sheriff in Mississippi Burning (1988), a role he felt broke his comedy mold. 'Nobody likes to be typecast as a barefooted hillbilly… that kind of turned things around," he told the Tulsa World in 2017. Sartain's film career included nine collaborations with director Alan Rudolph (Choose Me, Songwriter, Love at Large, and more), as well as roles under Carl Reiner in The Jerk and All of Me, Francis Ford Coppola in The Outsiders, Stephen Frears in The Grifters, and Michael Mann in Ali. In the 1980s, he teamed up with Bill Byrge to play Chuck in Hey, Vern, It's Ernest!—a role born from local commercials and later featured in Ernest films like Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest Saves Christmas, and Ernest Goes to Jail. He even took on Broadway, starring in Dracula beginning in 1977, and lent his voice to creating Leon Russell's album art in 1975. But by 2005, with Elizabethtown, Sartain quietly stepped away from acting. Survived by his wife Mary Jo, their three children – Sarah, Esther, and Ben- along with granddaughter Chloe and great‑grandson Teddy, Sartain leaves behind a legacy. The Beverly Hills Playhouse paid tribute to his memory on Instagram, writing: 'There was only ever one like this, and we are the richer for having his presence in our theatre. Rest in peace, Jack." May his soul rest in peace! First Published:

Netanyahu Lauds Trump's 'Bold Decision' To Attack Iran's Nuclear Sites: 'Peace Through Strength'

Trump and Netanyahu also spoke briefly after the attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, as reports indicate the US had informed Israel of the strikes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated US President Donald Trump for taking a 'bold decision" to strike Iran's nuclear sites, saying America has done what no other country could do – deny the world's most dangerous regime the world's most dangerous weapons. FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES 'Congratulations, President Trump, your bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history," he said in a video on X. Trump on Saturday said the American military had carried out a ' very successful attack" on three Iranian nuclear sites, including the crucial underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordow, marking a major escalation in the West Asian conflict. 'In tonight's action against Iran's nuclear facilities, America has been truly unsurpassed. It has done what no other country on Earth could do. History will recall that President Trump acted to deny the world's most dangerous regime, the world's most dangerous weapons," Netanyahu said. He said Trump's action will lead the Middle East to a future of peace and prosperity. 'President Trump and I often say: 'Peace through strength.' First comes strength, then comes peace. And tonight, President Trump and the United States acted with a lot of strength." Trump Speaks To Netanyahu As per Israeli estimates, the US strikes caused significant damage to Iranian nuclear facilities. Israel raised its alert level, permitting only essential activities until further notice, the military announced on Sunday after US strikes on Iran. An increased security presence was reported around the US embassy in Iraq, which had earlier asked Iran not to target US bases as the conflict escalated. Meanwhile, Trump told Reuters in a brief phone call that Iran should 'stop immediately, otherwise they'll get hit again." Iran's atomic energy organisation condemned the US attacks on key nuclear sites as 'barbaric" and in violation of international law. 'At dawn today, the country's nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan were attacked by the enemies of Islamic Iran in a barbaric act that violates international law," the organisation said in a statement published on state media. 'They've Been Killing Our People': Trump Warns Of More Attacks On Iran If It Does Not Make Peace

Last Updated: Trump described the US military strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities as a "spectacular military success" and warned of more strikes if Tehran did not comply. US President Donald Trump on Saturday (local time) addressed the country, warning Iran, the 'bully of the Middle East", to make peace or future attacks will be 'far greater and a lot easier". He said the US will go after other targets which can be taken out in a matter of minutes. FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES Trump described the US military strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities as a 'spectacular military success" as he spoke from the White House Cross Hall. 'Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely and totally obliterated," he said. — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 22, 2025 He warned that Iran could go after additional targets if Iran did not make peace, while advocating for a diplomatic solution. 'Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier," he said in his address. The US president also warned that US could go after many targets with 'precision, speed, and skill", which could be done 'in a matter of minutes". 'For 40 years, Iran had been saying death to America, death to Israel. They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms and legs in roadside bombs. We lost over a thousand people and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East and around the world have died as a direct result of their hate, in particular, so many were killed by their general, Qassem Soleimani," he said. He also thanked the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli military and the US pilots who carried out the airstrikes. 'This cannot continue. There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left," he added. Earlier, Trump said a 'full payload of BOMBS" was dropped on the underground nuclear facility at Fordow, despite giving Iran a time of two weeks to decide on a nuclear deal before joining Israel in the conflict. 'We have completed our very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. Iranian media confirmed that parts of the Fordow plant as well as the Isfahan and Natanz nuclear sites were attacked. In a second post announcing his address to the nation from the White House, Trump said that 'IRAN MUST NOW AGREE TO END THIS WAR." First Published: June 22, 2025, 07:40 IST
